Description
NAIC: 541710 - This project is an inventory of the reptile and amphibian fauna of 17 national park units in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. The Park Service units to be inventoried are the Blue Ridge Parkway, The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, the Obed Wild and Scenic River, Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site, Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Cowpens National Battlefield, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Fort Donelson National Battlefield, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, Kings Mountain National Military Park, Little River Canyon National Preserve, Ninety Six National Historic Site; Russell Cave National Monument, Shiloh National Military Park, and Stones River National Battlefield. For each project area, the goal is to detect and document 90 percent of the species reasonably expected to occur. In addition, the distributional aspects of the herpetofauna within the project areas are to be accurately described, especially in sensitive areas and for legally protected, rare and otherwise sensitive taxa. Comprehensive approaches to determining herpetofaunal assemblages in both terrestrial and wetland environments are needed, and the variety of features within the parks requires the application of multiple survey techniques. In order to obtain a representative list of species for the project areas, herpetofaunal samples must encompass not only extensive cover types, but also minor habitats and features that may relate to species richness. For those taxa for which no voucher exists in any curated collection, a museum specimen or photo is to be obtained and deposited at an NPS designated repository. Descriptive data to be recorded for each collection/observation site will include habitat information, ecological associations between species and habitat, frequency of occurrence for species encountered, as well as any other parameters that would provide insight into variations in distribution patterns and differences in species richness between sites. Sampling will be divided between structured surveys of established permanent plots and general searches of habitats not covered by the permanent plots. Geographic coordinates will be obtained for each collection and plot site. The contractor shall be the primary researcher and author. This project is to be completed within 2 to 3 years of initiation. All requests for solicitation packages must be in writing to the Contracting Officer. The solicitation package will be issued on or about March 7, 2002. The solicitation package will be issued by hard copy, floppy disc, CD rom, or Electronic Commerce (if available to the National Park Service).
