Description
Trawl fishing vessel to conduct a study of snow crab life history in the Eastern Bering Sea. This study will require five (5) bi-monthly trawl collection trips, which will be approximately nine days in length and will be conducted bi-monthly beginning in September 2002, and following in November 2002, January 2003, March 2003, and May 2003. The nine day trips shall fall within the first fifteen days of each specified month unless the Government concurs with the Contractor's offer of alternate dates. Crab will be taken by trawling, and will be held live in the vessel's crab tank until the end of the trip. Crab will be examined and sorted on deck, and up to about 600 crab will be tanked and brought back live to port, where some will be examined ashore and others will be packaged for live shipment to Kodiak. An important group of snow crab to be collected is mature females, which are found in abundance only well north of the Pribilof Islands. The primary fishing area will begin about 100 miles northwest of St. Paul Island and continue from there to the north and northwest. The trips will begin and end in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Minimum overall vessel length, approximately 36.5m (120 ft) although smaller vessels will be considered and evaluated accordingly; Minimum continuous horsepower output from main engine? 1000; Vessel must be able to tow standard survey trawl, a 400-mesh eastern trawl with 70' headrope and 95'footrope at a continuous speed of between 4.1 km/hr (2.2 kts) and 4.8km/hr (2.6 kts) under normally expected fishing conditions. Towing speeds of over 2.6 kts are not acceptable. Vessel must be able to maintain a minimum cruising speed of at least 16.8 km/hr (9 nm/hr) in low sea states; vessel should be completely rigged for mid-water trawling; vessel must have fuel capacity for approximately 14 days of continuous fishing operations.
