- Separation of Branched Versus Linear Polar Organic Molecules - Technology Transfer Opportunity Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico has developed a new class of material (SD-7041) that can perform a variety of molecular separations in bulk liquids. The separations are 100% reversible and may performed at room temperature with zero to low amounts of added energy, depending on the separation. This is possible because when the material is removed from the bulk liquid mixture, the sorbed molecules will desorb either spontaneously or with heating at less than 50 oC, often within minutes. The separated species may therefore easily be condensed and recovered in the liquid phase for use, re-use, or disposal. The material has been shown to selectively sorb from bulk liquid mixtures: linear alcohols from branched alcohols; short chain alcohols from long chain alcohols; alcohols from water. The material has also proved an effective (reversible) sorbent for tetrahydrofuran (THF), amines, and cyclohexane. This new class of material may have application in petro-chemical industrial manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and industrial effluent stream remediation.
