- NASA/LaRC plans to issue a NASA Research Announcement (NRA) for Research, Development, Prototyping, and Implementation of Crashworthy Designs. Specifically, the (NRA) plans to solicit proposals for research, development, prototyping and implementation of crashworthy systems which will enhance current technologies and create new technology. This announcement will solicit proposals for the following two major sections: Systems Approach to Crashworthy Aircraft Designs (structural designs that do not include the fuel system - energy absorbing structural designs) and Crash Resistant Fuel Systems. Phase I, or the screening phase will be focused on evaluating the technology or system for benefits and scientific feasibility. The duration of Phase I activities is six months. The approximate total funding to be awarded for fiscal year 2002 is $1M, for an anticipated 4-5 Phase I awards per topic. Phase II, or the implementation phase, will be focused on the maturation, development and validation of the technology. In Phase II, the most promising concepts resulting from Phase I will be selected for further development. Funding in the amount of $1M is expected to be available for Phase II activities in each of fiscal years 2003 and 2004. The duration of Phase II activities may range up to two years.
