- Description
- Potential source(s) are being sought to adapt, fine-tune and validate a numerical mathematical model for predicting the performance of 200mm Continuous Open Shear Roll Mill (SRM) previously developed by Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT) for propellant processing at Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP), Radford Virginia. It is also the objective to convert the numerical predictive model into interactive simulation software and to develop an on-line thermal imaging control system software to interface with the 200mm SRM. The model must be sufficiently robust to make predictions of SRM performance at several sizes (200-mm, 300-mm) when processing various propellant formulations such as AA-2 and JA-2. The contractor shall interface with Alliant Techsystems Inc., the operating contractor at Radford AAP, and make available an on-line thermal image camera(s) to collect temperature profiles data on the SRM during the wet inert simulant runs and the initial runs of live AA-2 propellant at RFAAP. Data generated from the previous JA-2 runs at Nitrochemie in Germany and data collected from the live AA-2 trial runs and the wet inert simulant runs on the ATK 200mm Continuous Open SRM at RFAAP shall be used to fine tune and validate the numerical mathematical model. The purpose of this survey is to identify contractors having the capability to develop and validate such a simulation software/model of the SRM. At a minimum, they should be able to demonstrate the following: .Ability to team with ATK Ammunition and Powder Company, the operating contractor at Radford Army Ammunition Plant. .Availability of Thermal Image Camera(s) to use on the 200mm SRM at RFAAP for data collection. .Availability of a prototype SRM process for simulant demonstration runs. .Experience in handling energetic materials. .Ability to select suitable simulants. .Ability to specify control equipment to be installed on the SRM for data acquisition (transducers, etc). Expertise in designing experiments to validate theoretical model in terms of both mechanical (flow dynamics) and thermal processes, which are occurring. .Ability to characterize the rheological behavior (including wall slip) behavior of energetic materials and simulants. .Proven capabilities in mathematical modeling and the implementation of numerical methods particularly with viscoplastic material subject to wall slip. .Possess sufficiently fast computers to run the model within time frames comparable to the relevant industrial operation. .Facility suitable for continuously addressing the needs of the Army to run the mathematical model at relatively short intervals to gain the targeted benefits from this modeling effort. .Proprietary information should be properly identified. Your submission should include organization name/address/point of contact and phone number, and whether the company is a large or a small business.
