THE DEVELOPMENT WILL BEGIN EARLY IN FISCAL YEAR (FY) 2003. THE CARTRIDGE IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE THE MGS A LOW COST ANTI-PERSONNEL CAPA- BILITY AGAINST DISMOUNTED INFANTRY. THE DESIGN OF CANISTER CARTRIDGES MUST BE COMPATIBLE WITH THE M68A1E4 RIFLED GUN AND MGS AUTOLOADER. THIS CARTRIDGE WAS ENVISIONED TO BE FUZELESS, THUS KEEPING THE COST LOW, BUT ALTERNATIVES WILL BE CONSIDERED IF FOUND TO BE COST EFFECTIVE. THE CARTRIDGE PERFORMANCE RE- QUIREMENT IS TO DEFEAT A DISMOUNTED INFANTRY SQUAD IN THE OPEN FROM A RANGE OF 50 METERS TO AT LEAST A MINIMUM RANGE OF 500 METERS (700 DESIRED). THE CARTRIDGE SHALL NOT EXCEED 55 POUNDS IN TOTAL WEIGHT, AND SHALL FUNCTIONALLY WORK IN THE MGS WITHOUT ANY ALTERATION, WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION OF A FIRE CONTROL SOLUTION. IT IS THE GOVERNMENT'S INTENTION TO AWARD A DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT AT THE ONSET OF FY03 FOR THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF TEST CARTRIDGES CULMINATING IN A SYSTEM DEMONSTRATION IN AN OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT BEFORE THE END OF FY04. AT THAT TIME, A PRODUCTION QUANTITY MAY BE AWARDED AS A PRICED OPTION OF THE INITIAL CONTRACT. SECURITY CLEARANCE MAY BE REQUIRED. CONCEPTUAL DESIGNS/PROPOSALS FOR A CANISTER/ANTI-PERSONNEL ROUND WILL BE CONSIDERED IN RESPONSE TO AN RFP TO BE RELEASED WHEN FUNDING IS MADE AVAILABLE. ANY RESPONSIBLE SOURCES ARE ASKED TO IDENTIFY INTEREST, POINTS OF CONTACT, ETC., WITHIN 15 DAYS OF THIS NOTICE TO: COMMANDER, US ARMY, TACOM-ARDEC, ATTN: AMSTA-AQ-APF, JO ANN SMITH, BLDG 9, PICATINNY ARSENAL NJ 07806-5000.
