- Description
- National Cancer Institute on behalf of the National Institute of Neurological Disorder and Stroke, Laboratory of Functional and Molecular Imaging (LFMI), proposes to enter into a sole source contract with Resonance Research Inc., 10 Cook Street, Billerica, MA 01821, for a Shim Set and Shim Power Supply for an 11.7T MRI System. The Laboratory of Functional and Molecular Imaging is dedicated to developing ultra-high field MRI techniques for assessing brain function in vivo. The LFMI has a state-of-the-art, one of two-of-a-kind, 11.7T horizontal MRI spectrometer for performing brain imaging of rodents at very-high spatial and temporal resolution. The key factor in LFMI's research is spatial resolution of acquired images, which depends on two factors: 1) the magnetic field strength, and 2) the magnetic field homogeneity. The magnetic field strength dictates the available signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of MR images. When samples are inserted in the magnet bore, severe local field distortions occur due to the different magnetic properties of different tissues. These field distortions, if left uncorrected, render the MR images useless. The LFMI requires a 6 channel shim set and associated 6 channel shim power supply to equip the 11.7T MRI System. The shim set requires the following features: 1) Inner diameter 150 mm, outer diameter 200 mm; 2) 5 second order coils (Z2, ZX, ZY, C2, S2) and one third order coil, Z3; 3) minimum of 2500 Hz/cm2 shim capability on each second order coil, and 1000 Hz/cm3 on the Z3 coil. The 6-Channel Power Supply requires the following features: 1) capable of producing 10 A per channel and 2kW dc output in a six-channel configuration, 2) full power bandwidth of 35 kHz; 3) 90 V maximum voltage compliance. Resonance Research Inc., is the only source known to the Government that can provide the above items with the required features. However, if any interested party believes it can meet the above requirements, it may submit a statement of capabilities. The capability statement and any other furnished information must be in writing and must contain material in sufficient detail to allow the NCI to determine if the party can fully meet the Governments requirements herein. Capability statements must be received in the contracting office no later than 2:00 PM EST on April 24, 2002. This action is pursuant to 41 USC 253(1) and under the authority of FAR 6.3102-1. The requirement will be procured as a commercial item in accordance with FAR Part 12. If you have any questions, please contact Cynthia Brown, Purchasing Agent, (301) 402-4509. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed requirement based on responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. Information received shall be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. See numbered note #1. Total small business set-aside. NAICS Code 334510, business size standard 500. No collect calls will be accepted.
