Description
NA Craig A. McCarthy, Project Engineer, Phone 5082334702, Fax 5082336493, Email: Criag.McCarthy@natick.army.mil SOURCES SOUGHT: Natick Soldier Center, Soldier Biological Chemical Command Individual Water Systems Program is seeking information on Commercial O ff the Shelf (COTS) systems, modified COTS, research items, components, and scientific studies and reports in the areas of; water purification, water carrying, water drinking, and water consumption, to be used by individual Marines. Individual water purifi cation pieces should be able to purify water to the objective of the TRI-Service Standard (TB MED 577, NAVMED P-5010-9 Appendix D, AFOSH Standard 48-7) and as a threshold the EPA purifier standard. This may be done as a system, with the subcomponents infor mation being submitted jointly/separately by different companies. The proposed system must be capable of desalinization. Scientific studies and reports and systems in development may also be considered and should be submitted if they could achieve performa nce characteristics listed below. Along with water purification new approaches in water carrying, storage, and consumption methods are also requested; both revolutionary and evolutionary methods and ideas are sought through this announcement. Mandatory Performance Characteristics For Water Purification System: 1. The Water Purifier will be: lightweight, man portable, small footprint, easy to maintain, and durable 2. If replaceable filters are required they will be easy to replace and must be able to purify 150 liters of water before replacement. 3. Capable of removing contaminants from fresh water sources. 4. Capable of Removing salt from salt-water sources. 5. Capable of removing and/or disinfecting water-borne bacteria, biological and chemical agents to 99.999% and remove and/or destroy most common pesticides, insecticides and other organic materials. 6. All components of the water purification system shall be compatible with present and planned NBC suits, nozzles/check valves. 7. The system shall be separable into major sub-systems and components. If the mission will not likely encounter brackish water (total dissolved solids greater than 1000 milligrams per liter) or seawater sources, then the desalination device shall not be required as an integral part of the rest of the system. 8. The desalination device shall not weigh more than 24 ounces (dry weight) and shall be capable of producing one liter of water in 30 minutes. 9. The desalination subsystem shall be capable of treating 300 liters of water before replacement of reverse osmosis elements or other major components. 10. The system weight shall not exceed 32 ounces including the water container; container bag or backpack, filters and disinfection components for fresh water sources (not brackish or seawater) and have a minimum carrying capacity of two liters. 11. The disinfection components system weight shall not exceed 6 ounces (dry weight) and shall not impart a strong disinfection residual taste (chlorine, iodine, bromine, etc) in the finished water. 12. If batteries are required for system operation, a minimum of 150 liters of water shall be treated before battery replacement occurs. Low battery indicator shall be integral to the system. Batteries shall be commercially available and shall be include d in component weight limits identified above. 13. The system (wet) shall be capable of use after sustaining freezing conditions and then maintaining integrity upon thawing. 14. The system shall be resistant to bio-film buildup or shall have integral bio-film removal capability. Interested firms are requested to respond NLT 10 MAY 2002, identifying their business size and a corporate point of contact. Interested sources should respond to: (U. S. Mail address) Natick Soldier Center, Soldier Biological Chemical Command, (Craig A. Mc Carthy) Room D232, 15 Kansas St, Natick, MA 01760.
