- Description
- The Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensors Directorate, Sensor Applications and Demonstrations Division, Electronic Warfare Branch (AFRL/SNZW) is soliciting research proposals for the Lightweight Modular Support Jammer (LMSJ) Critical Experiment (CE) program. The objective of the LMSJ effort is to do a requirements analysis, design, develop, fabricate, ground (field) test, and demonstrate a flyable brassboard model of a flexible and modular support jammer system. Maximum emphasis shall be placed on a scalable architecture hardware configuration which has application to a wide range of host platform air vehicles from small expendable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to fighter aircraft size external pods. One, or a few transmitter/aperture modules may form the basic level support jammer system in a small expendable or recoverable UAV. Many modules may be combined to result in a greater number of simultaneous threats to be jammed and a much higher power total system configuration for installation in a fighter pod. Affordability is key factor in all expendable jammer applications. The "front end" receiver subsystem for the LMSJ shall be, as a minimum, all, or elements of the AFRL/SNZW Advanced Threat Alert and Response (ATAR) digital-based receiver flyable brassboard now undergoing development in a laboratory CE program. ATAR includes an Electronic Attack (EA) jammer techniques generator which shall perform the jamming signal selection and generation functions for the LMSJ brassboard. The required ATAR receiver hardware will be furnished by the government to the LMSJ contractor. ATAR data and interface documentation will also be provided by means of an associate contractor agreement in the LMSJ contract. The LMSJ system shall be designed to effectively counter both communications and radar threats in the 20.0 Megahertz through 4.0 Gigahertz frequency band, in one or multiple sub-bands. Sophisticated technologies and EA techniques shall be developed to adequately nullify modern threat radar and communications advancements. Major technology and techniques advancements shall be also addressed in the areas of high power transmit array apertures, transmitter RF power amplifier device applications, both solid state and vacuum electronics, and support jamming techniques and algorithms. The brassboarded hardware shall be fabricated and tested to withstand the rigors of a full flight test in a separate, future program, should such a program be eventually funded. Tasks to be completed in this effort include a thorough analysis of the technical and operational requirements for a support jammer to defeat the radar and communications classes of threats in the above frequency band and a definition of those threat drivers which affect the overall system architecture. A "Use Case" study shall be performed to identify and select candidate architectures for further development. A hardware design, development, and fabrication phase will follow to produce the subject LMSJ brassboard. Concept and hardware testing will involve a thorough evaluation in the AFRL/SNZW Integrated Demonstration and Application Laboratory (IDAL) to assure that the selected design meets EA objectives for the LMSJ modules. IDAL testing shall be used to ready the brassboard for ground (field) testing to be conducted at a national open-air electronic warfare test range. A final technical report, to include test data and results will be published. A final program briefing to the Air Force will also be required.
