- Description
- Sole source procurement to Yumetech, Seattle, WA for rendering dynamic structures using web-capable 3D models for military simulations at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Yumetech manages the XJ3D code base and is the principal contributor to that code base and possess the required expertise. SERVICE DESCRIPTION MEMO: REQUEST FOR SERVICE CONTRACT PER THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT OF WORK: TITLE: RENDERING DYNAMIC STRUCTURES USING WEB-CAPABLE 3D MODELS FOR MILITARY SIMULATIONS 1.0 BACKGROUND THE TRAINING & DOCTRINE COMMAND (TRADOC) ANALYSIS CENTER (TRAC) MONTEREY IS SPONSORING RESEARCH IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGIES/METHODOLOGIES FOR RENDERING DEFORMABLE SURFACES IN ARMY SIMULATIONS. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO DETERMINE THE BEST APPROACH TO MODEL COMPLEX GEOMETRY FOR DYNAMIC INTERACTIONS WITH ENTITIES IN DISTRIBUTED MILITARY SIMULATIONS. INTERACTIONS OF INTEREST INCLUDE THE FIRING OF VARIOUS DIRECT-FIRE MUNITIONS AT TERRAIN AND COMPLEX STRUCTURES, THEREBY CAUSING PHYSICS-BASED DEFORMATIONS AND/OR COLLATERAL EFFECTS. THIS RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE A SUITABLE APPROACH FOR DESCRIBING COMPLEX STRUCTURES THAT CAN BE DYNAMICALLY MODIFIED BASED ON INTERACTIONS WITH ENTITIES. CONSTRAINTS INCLUDE SUITABILITY FOR USE WITH WEB-BASED 3D GRAPHICS, APPLICABILITY TO DIVERSE PHYSICALLY BASED MODELS, AND NETWORKED ENTITY COMMUNICATIONS. THE END PRODUCT WILL FACILITATE DOCTRINE DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING, INCLUDING A SIMULATION-BASED ACQUISITION (SBA) TOOL, FOR ASSETS USED IN MILITARY OPERATIONS ON URBAN TERRAIN (MOUT). 2.0 SCOPE THIS TASK INVOLVES SOFTWARE ANALYSIS TO ASSESS APPLICABILITY OF EXISTING SOFTWARE TOOLS AND PRODUCTS TO THE FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS, AS WELL AS SOFTWARE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT TO INTEGRATE EXISTING PRODUCTS AND TO DEV ELOP NEW SOFTWARE TO MEET THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE TASK. 3.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PERFORM THE FOLLOWING: 3.1 USING OPEN STANDARDS AND THE XJ3D CODE BASE, PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING CAPABILITIES: A. COMPLETE IMPLEMENTATION OF REMAINING VRML 97 NODES (APPROXIMATELY 13 OF 57) IN THE XJ3D CODE BASE. B. PROVIDE SUPPORT TO THE KEYSENSOR NODE. C. IMPLEMENT PROTODECLARE AND EXTERNPROTODECLARE CAPABILITIES FOR LANGUAGE EXTENSIBILITY. D. PROVIDE SCRIPT NODE SUPPORT FOR JAVA AND ECMASCRIPT LANGUAGES, AS DEFINED BY THE VRML 97 SPECIFICATION. E. PROVIDE EQUIVALENT SUPPORT FOR VRML UTF-8 AND X3D XML ENCODINGS, DEMONSTRATED VIA COMMAND-LINE TRANSLATION CAPABILITY. 3.2 IMPLEMENT A CAPABILITY FOR "RAY PICKING" IN A LOADED SCENE FOR DETERMINING INTERSECTION LOCATION AND INTERSECTED GEOMETRIC OBJECT(S). THIS IS NECESSARY TO LOCALIZE MUNITION IMPACT POINTS I N BUILDINGS AND OTHER IRREGULAR OBJECTS. THIS CAPABILITY IS NOT A SPECIFIED REQUIREMENT FOR VRML 97 AND DOES NOT REQUIRE SIMULTANEOUS RENDERING, SO IT CAN RUN AS A STAND-ALONE APPLICATION. 3.3 TEST AND VERIFY SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE ABOVE CAPABILITIES USING DISTRIBUTED INTERACTIVE SIMULATION (DIS) PROTOCOL SUPPORT, GEOVRML/GEOSPATIAL SUPPORT, HUMANOID ANIMATION (H-ANIM) SUPPORT, AND REPRESENTATIVE TACTICAL SCENES THAT INCLUDE DEFORMATIONS AND EXPLOSIONS FROM THE SCENARIO AUTHORING AND VISUALIZATION USING ADVANCE GRAPHICAL ENVIRONMENTS (SAVAGE) PROJECT LIBRARY (REFER TO HTTP://WEB.NPS.NAVY.MIL/~BRUTZMAN/SAVAGE/CONTENTS.HTML). 3.4 IDENTIFY AND EVALUATE SOFTWARE PACKAGES AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING INTEGRATION OF THOSE PACKAGES WITH THE XJ3D CODE BASE. SOME EXAMPLES OF POTENTIALLY BENEFICIAL SOFTWARE INCLUDE REZ, CHISEL, AND THE NPSNET-V DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR PROTOCOL (FO R RAPID XML-BASED DEFINITION OF NEW APPLICATION-SPECIFIC NETWORKING PROTOCOLS), AND THE APACHE HTTP SERVER. 4.0 GOVERNMENT-FURNISHED EQUIPMENT REQUIRED NONE. 5.0 TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS APPROXIMATELY 2 TRIPS, AROUND 3 DAYS EACH TRIP. THE CONTRACTOR WILL BE REQUIRED TO VISIT NPS FOR TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS. 6.0 DELIVERABLES 6.1 INFORMAL TECHNICAL REPORT DESCRIBING THE TECHNICAL APPROACH, SOFTWARE EVALUATED FOR INCLUSION IN THIS WORK, LESSONS LEARNED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE EXTENSIONS/IMPROVEMENTS TO THE WORK. THE REPORT IS DUE AT THE END OF CONTRACT. 6.2 SOFTWARE SOURCE FILES, SOFTWARE BUILD FILES, AND SOFTWARE DESIGN DOCUMENTATION. SOFTWARE MATERIALS ARE DUE AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT. 7.0 PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: 330 DAYS FROM DATE OF AWARD. ESTIMATED DATE OF AWARD IS 22 MAY 2002. 8.0 PLACE OF PER FORMANCE: CONTRACTOR FACILITIES/GOVERNMENT FACILITIES
