SECTION 02510 ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENT PART 1 GENERAL A. Selected materials and methods for work in this section are in accordance with applicable provisions of the Virginia Department of Transportation Road and Bridge Specifications, referred to hereinafter by VDOT Section. Subsections of specifications describing method of measurement and basis of payment shall not apply to this work. The term ?Department? when used in the Road and Bridge Specifications shall be understood to mean the Owner?s Representative. 1.1 SECTION INCLUDES A. Asphalt concrete pavement. 1.2 REFERENCES A. Publications listed below form part of specification to extent referenced. Publications are referenced in text by basic designation only. 1. AMERICAN SOCIETY OF STATE HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS (AASHTO) a. AASHTO T230-68 (1986) Determining Degree of Pavement Compaction of Bituminous Aggregate Mixtures 2. VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (VDOT) a. VDOT (1994) Road and Bridge Specifications b. VDOT SUP (1980) Virginia Supplement to the Federal Highway Administration Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. SD-12, Field Test Reports 1. Asphalt concrete thickness. 2. Asphalt concrete density. B. SD-13, Certificates 1. Materials. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS A. Asphalt Concrete Surface: Conform material to VDOT Section 211 for asphalt concrete, Type SM-9.5A or SM-9.5AL. B. Asphalt: Conform material to VDOT Section 210. Use grade CRS-1, CRS-2, CRS-1h, or CSS-1h for tack coat. CMS-2 may be used for tack coat during the winter months. With exception of CMS-2, asphalt for tack coat may be diluted with 50-percent water provided that resulting material produces uniform application of tack. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 SUBGRADE PREPARATION A. Mill existing pavement to a depth of 2 inches in accordance with VDOT Section 515. Leave surface clean and dry prior to application of tack coat. 3.2 TACK COAT A. Apply liquid asphalt material at 0.10 gallon per square yard in accordance with VDOT Section 310. 3.3 ASPHALT CONCRETE SURFACE A. Place surface on cleaned, milled concrete deck in accordance with VDOT Section 315. 3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Asphalt Pavement Samples: For determining asphalt pavement density and thickness, take samples with coring machine or cut a 12-inch square out of pavement in accordance with AASHTO T230-68. Take one set (3 samples) for every 300 tons of material placed at locations selected by the Owner?s Representative. Replace removed pavement with new mixture and refinish. B. Asphalt Pavement Tolerances 1. Surface Tolerance: Conform to VDOT Section 315.07,(a),3. Straightedge test. 2. Thickness Tolerance: Conform to VDOT Section 315.07,(b). 3. Density Requirements: 96 percent of laboratory density as determined by AASHTO T230-68. C. Final Acceptance: Although nuclear field density testing method may be used for operational control during asphalt pavement placement, final acceptance of asphalt pavement will be based on test results from pavement samples per AASHTO T230-68. 3.5 TESTS A. Submit certified reports of tests. Payment for costs in connection with sampling and testing shall be included in price bid. END OF SECTION
