DTRA intends to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to purchase an initial quantity of 700 pagers, and potential (option) orders for 700 to 1200 pagers in each of the following two fiscal years. The required pagers shall be Sensor Technology Engineering, Inc., Radiation Pager?-S or equivalent to meet operational and equipment standardization requirements of the Border Security Initiative. Any product identified as equal to the Radiation Pager?-S must meet these minimum characteristics: small (approximately the size of a common message pager), lightweight, rugged, self-contained device to be worn on a belt or carried in a pocket, must be e asily utilized with minimal training, and must come with an instruction manual (in English and, if available, other foreign languages). Any product proposed as equal to the Radiation Pager?-S must also meet the following minimum operational requirements a nd technical specifications: significantly greater sensitivity and detection of radioactive material than the commercially available Geiger-Muller tube type detectors; x-ray and gamma ray detection at levels above the natural background; operator alert/ala rm (flashing high-intensity light and operator's choice of using either an audible or vibrating alarm); Cesium Iodide scintillation detector; capable of continuous use for 1 year on 2 AA alkaline batteries; operates within a temperature range of 5 to 122 d egrees Fahrenheit; 45 KeV energy cutoff; less than one second integration time; and a seven segment LED display indicated radiation intensity.
