- Description
- The U.S. Dept. of Commerce/NOAA/NOS/Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with the Ocean Conservancy to provide continuation of the project entitled Community-Based Coral Reef Monitoring Training and Data Collection Effort in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico - A Joint Project of the Ocean Conservancy and the Reef Environmental Education Foundation. The Ocean Conservancy has collaborated with REEF to successfully conduct workshops in La Parguera, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and San Andres, Columbia. Through the RECON Program, the Ocean Conservancy shall work in collaboration with REEF to conduct an additional joint training and data collection effort and a second independent RECON training and data collection workshop in Puerto Rico. The project shall involve training and education seminars aimed at the local community as well as data collection. The training seminars and in-water training shall be directed at not only explaining identification and methodology, but also discussing the application of data and the usefulness of marine area management and pollution prevention efforts. This project will empower members of the community to participate in the monitoring of local coral reef systems; supplement the data required by reef managers and researchers to manage local reef resources; and increase public understanding of the threats to coral reef ecosystems. This is a notice of intent with no solicitation package available. Award will be made using simplified acquisition procedures.
