Description
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires assistance in setting up experiments which use CW UV narrowband laser sources which are used in experiments on trapped beryllium and magnesium atomic ions. Work is expected to involve two overall tasks: (1) Set up of lasers and ancillary equipment for laser cooling and quantum state manipulation of beryllium and magnesium ions which are trapped in linear rf traps, (2) Carry out modeling studies of ion dynamics in segmented linear ion traps used in these experiments. Subtasks of item 1 are (1) optimize power of two 560 nm dye lasers pumped by 532 nm solid-state lasers, (2) stabilize frequency of dye lasers to molecular iodine spectra using saturated absorption techniques, (3) design and construction of frequency-doubling optics to convert 560 nm radiation to 280 nm radiation, (4) implementation and optimization of 560 -280 nm doublers, (5) installation of beam switching hardware for 280 nm laser beams (using acousto-optic modulators, and (6) assist in taking data on quantum logic experiments using beryllium ions sympathetically cooled with Mg + ions. Applicants must have demonstrated previous experience with both CW UV coherent sources and laser cooling of trapped atomic ions. Interested applicants must submit a written qualification statement with references, showing relevant experience. This announcement/solicitation is being issued under the Simplified Acquisition Procedures, FAR part 13 (NTE $100,00). The award decision will be based upon the best value to the Government, with technical merit and past performance being significantly more important than price. Requests should reference Synopsis number NB847-200175DT and include a written qualification statement clearly establishing capability to meet the above requirements. Written responses will be evaluated and must be received by September 9, 2002. Questions Should Be Submitted IN WRITING to the Contracting Office. No RFQ package is available. This procurement is being conducted per Simplified Acquisition Procedures FAR Part 13 (NTE $100,000). FAR Clauses in full text are at http://www.ARNET.gov/far Agency level protest procedures are referenced at http://www.doc.gov/oam/conops/#reference
