- Description
- The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) requires a high power, narrow linewidth, laser intended for two applications. *** The first application is a high power optical dipole trap for ultracold atoms. The depth of such a trap is proportional to the power, which must be at least 6 W of laser light in the wavelength range from 1000-1100 nm. The laser must be far off-resonance (767 and 780 nm) to prevent heating of the atoms due to light scattering, while remaining in the range of the optics and light detectors, which generally fall off for wavelengths higher than 1064 nm (the wavelength of the widely used Nd:YAG type laser). The wavelength must also be > 780 nm in order for the potential to be attractive, rather than repulsive. The dipole trap laser must also have a nearly pure TEM00 spatial mode, linear polarization, amplitude stability better than 1%, and intensity noise lower than 1%. *** The second application for the laser is an optical lattice for the atoms. This application requires somewhat less power, but is critically dependent upon the laser having an narrow linewidth (<10 MHz full-width at half-max). The optical lattice trap requires at least 3 W of laser light in the wavelength range from 1000-1100, a nearly pure TEM00 spatial mode, linear polarization, intensity noise lower than 1%, and frequency noise lower than 1% in the range from DC to a few MHz. *** This acquisition is being conducted under FAR Part 13.1 (NTE $100K) as a best value acquisition. FAR provisions are available online at http://www.arnet.gov/far/. *** Evaluation factors include (1) price, (2) technical merit specifically applicable to the intended application and (3) delivery date of five weeks or fewer ARO. Responses must specifically address all performance criteria in this solicitation. *** This is a combined solicitation/announcement. No separate solicitation is available. The anticipated award date is September 23, 2002.
