Description
This is a special notice issued by Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC), management and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. WSRC wishes to determine public interest in licensing for commercial applications a new method of phosphate-amended bioventing or biosparging that provides a cost-effective, controllable alternative for remediating sites contaminated with metals. The new PrecipiPHOS (TM) method provides a carbon feed source and a phosphate nutrient that enable the in situ growth of microbes. The gaseous organo-phosphorus nutrient mixture is introduced into the contaminated zone via injection wells. As microbes feed on the nutrient mixture, they produce inorganic phosphates as a byproduct of the digestive process. The inorganic phosphates stabilize metals present in the contaminated zone through precipitation, co-precipitation, or adsorption. The new method is useful in treating dissolved metals, metals sorbed to soils, and radionuclides. The method can be used in soil, groundwater, or both and can treat metal contaminants over a far greater range of conditions than traditional methods. WSRC has filed a provisional U.S. patent application on this invention. For more information on the PrecipiPHOS environmental remediation technology and licensing opportunities, contact Joseph P. Dugan, telephone (803) 725-0848 or (800) 228-3843, Fax: (803) 725-4988, email: joseph.dugan@srs.gov, or address: Westinghouse Savannah River Company, Building 773-41A, Room #243, Aiken, SC 29808. Responses to this notice should be received by September 23, 2002. This is not a request for a formal subcontract; it is a request for interested parties and licensing opportunities only.
