Description
The National Park Service (NPS), in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration (FEWA) and the Denver Service Center (DSC), proposes to relocate approximately one-quarter mile of County Road-248 (locally referred to Ruins Road) within the boundaries of Aztec Ruins National Monument (AZRU). The road section will be relocated about 60 meters south of the existing road and is necessitated by traffic safety concerns at the entrance to the AZRU visitor center and a curve near the southeast corner of East Ruin, and by concerns for damaging vibrations to the historic AZRU visitor center building and possibly the main ruins of the monument. To meet National Historic Preservations Act 106 compliance information needs, two phases of archeological testing have recently been conducted within the proposed new right-of-way alignment and resulted in the delineation of the western boundary of archeological site LA 1674 and added additional information to our knowledge of the depth and character of the archeological site. However, the north, east and south boundaries of the site are not known nor is the general character of much of the buried deposits of the site. OPTION A The general work to be performed by the Contractor includes: - conduct a magnetic and resistance geophysical survey of approximately 13,200 square meters (3.3 ac) of site LA 1674. - interpret the results of that geophysical survey. - if determined necessary (and approved by NPS), ground-truth no more than three select anomalies by conducting limited archeological excavation to determine their character. - provide the results of this investigation in a report meeting professional standards, and - provide the NPS with all materials generated during this project. OPTION B The general work to be performed by the Contractor includes: - conduct magnetic, resistance, and ground penetrating radar geophysical surveys of approximately 24,000 square meters(5.9 ac) of site LA 1674. - interpret the results of that geophysical survey. - if determined necessary (and approved by NPS), ground-truth no more than six(6) select anomalies by conducting limited archeological excavation to determine their character. - provide the results of this investigation in a report meeting professional standards, and - provide the NPS with all materials generated during this project.
