Description
The U.S. Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) has a requirement for the design and execution of experiments which use CW UV narrowband laser sources for frequency standards based on laser-cooled trapped ions. The project will investigate the feasibility of simultaneously trapping an ion that has desirable clock features (A1+) with an ion that can be used for cooling and detection of the clock ion's quantum state (Mg+ or Be+). Specific tasks are as follows: (1) investigate options for generating highly-stable, tunable laser radiation at 267 nm; (2) stabilize frequency of lasers to stable, vibration-isolated optical cavities; (3) design ion trap apparatus for clock and cooling/detection ions; (4) construction of ion trap apparatus; (5) installation of beam switching hardware for laser beams (using acousto-optic modulators); (6) carry out experiments to sympathetically cool clock ions; (7) perform theoretical studies of systematic frequency shifts expected in clock performance. This procurement is being conducted per FAR Part 13, Simplified Acquisition Procedures (NTE $100K). Interested sources must submit a written qualification statement with references showing relevant experience that demonstrates previous experience with both CW UV coherent sources and laser cooling of trapped atomic ions. The award decision will be based on Best Value to the Government with technical merit and past performance being significantly more important than price. Interested sources must submit a proposal by close of business October 15, 2002. Proposals submitted must clearly establish the capability to meet the above requirement. Terms and Conditions and agency level protest procedures can be found on web site http://oamweb.osec.doc.gov/CONOPS/#REFERENCE. Hard copy in full text available from office address and phone number listed in notice. Anticipated award date October 18, 2002. Contracting Officer: Michelle Sandoval. Technical Contact: David Wineland, 303-497-5286.
