Description: The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking sources for a requirement to purchase 10,000 - 15,000 adult Cyphocleonus achetes biocontrol insects for spotted knapweed control project in Montana (north of St. Mary's). This purchase must be placed in the Fall 2002 with shipment of adult Cyphocleonus achetes in the Summer 2003. The eggs must be obtained in the fall before the current adults die; reared; and held until it is biologically appropriate for them to complete the cycle to adults. This process will involve an insect rearing technology utilizing an artificial diet, Patent No. 6,293,223 B1, Artificial Diet and Method Using an Artificial Diet for mass rearing of Insects, OR an equally effective and equivalent diet that will result in the desired number of adult Cyphocleonus achetes in the Summer 2003. The laboratory-produced colonies must be certified by an insect pathologist that commonly expected insect diseases for this insect are not present.
