Description
Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Prime Contractor, in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, manage a Project titled National Compact Stellerator Experiment (NCSX). The purpose of Project is to develop, fabricate, and commission by July 2007 a Compact Stellerator. In preparation for fabrication of critical components, scheduled to begin in late calendar year 2003, manufacturing development activities, which includes fabrication of a prototype coil winding form, are now being addressed. PPPL is seeking firms to compete on a best value basis for two Subcontracts to be awarded for manufacturing development activities for modular coil winding forms, and fabrication of one prototype winding form. The modular coil winding forms will be cast from stainless steel (or other PPPL accepted austenitic casting alloys with equivalent properties) heat-treated and machined. The weight of each form, after machining, is about 5,000 lbs. The forms will define the geometry of the modular coils and serve as their primary support structure. The use of a manufacturing development / prototype fabrication Subcontracts selected because of the complexity of the coil winding form shapes (the NCSX will require 18 coil winding forms, six each of three different shapes), strict tolerances and the requirement for low permeability. Statements of interest should be sent to Larry L. Sutton, e-mail lsutton@pppl.gov.
