Description
Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Prime Contractor, in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, manage a Project entitled National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX). The Project goal is to develop, fabricate and commission by June 2007 a Compact Stellarator for fusion energy research. Manufacturing development activities for critical components of NCSX are scheduled to begin in early calendar year 2003. In preparation for this, PPPL is seeking firms to compete on a best value basis for two Subcontracts to be awarded for manufacturing development activities for the NCSX vacuum vessel. The NCSX vacuum vessel is a three-fold symmetric toroid with highly shaped poloidal cross-sections. The vessel is to be fabricated primarily of alloy (UNS 06625) and is configured in three 120 degree segments with bolted joints between them. The requiremens of the manufacturing development Subcontracts include manufacturing studies and the production of a full scale segment of the vessel. The use of vacuum vessel manufacturing development / prototype fabrication Subcontracts has been selected to focus on critical aspects of manufacturing the vacuum vessel, that is, complex geometry, accurate location and fabrication of vessel ports, tolerance control, production of vacuum quality welds with low distortion and timely low-cost fabrication of the vessel. PPPL anticipates the follow-on vacuum vessel production Subcontract would be awarded to one of the manufacturing development Subcontractors. Statements of interest should be sent to Larry L. Sutton, e-mail lsutton@pppl.gov.
