Description
The United States Air Force war-fighting dominance depends upon our superior people, training, platforms, information, and air armaments. To maintain the edge in air armaments, the Munitions Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory directs and conducts fundamental and applied research on conventional air-delivered armaments. Research activities incorporate every aspect of conventional weapon design including seekers, navigation and control, image and signal processing, explosives, warheads, fuzing, and munitions integration and assessment. Our research vision is not constrained to just traditional incremental developments; rather, we openly seek investments in justifiable high-leverage or paradigm-shifting technologies involving innovative concepts of operation and information-centric warfare applicable to strategic military engagements beyond 2020. Our concerted search for such Revolutionary Technologies led to the commission of the Revolutionary Technology Committee in 1998; under its charter and headed by the Chief Scientist Dr. Robert L. Sierakowski, the Munitions Directorate funds revolutionary technology projects, establishes long-term challenges, and sponsors distinguished lecturers. This seminar series has been used to illuminate the grand challenges and stimulate creativity in a diverse acquisition community at Eglin AFB. Among the distinguished speakers that have participated in the seminar series are: Professor Lawrence Krauss, the author of The Physics of Star Trek; astrophysicist Jeanne Cavelos, the author of The Science of Star Wars; Dr. Dennis Bushnell, the Chief Scientist of NASA, Langley; and a senior intelligence analyst. Some lectures contain sensitive information but others are open to the public with space-available seating. Lectures usually last one hour with another hour allocated for questions, discussion, and book signings when applicable. The Directorate typically sponsors two guest visits annually and provides for the invitees? travel expenses and a nominal stipend for professional services. Candidate speakers include renown authors, distinguished professors, private consultants, and senior intelligence officers; speakers are expected to have visionary expertise evidenced by publications and prior lectures at similar venues. The Revolutionary Technology Committee accepts nominations for consideration on a continual basis. For further information, please contact Dr. Alex Cash: cash@eglin.af.mil, 850-882-2141, ext. 2210.
