Description
Stable Supported Catalysts with Maximal Dispersion Basic research at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM, has discovered a vacuum method to make stable supported catalysts with only 1-2 monolayers of reactive metal. Recent theoretical work by others suggests that these may be as reactive as supported nanocrystals of metal, and by achieving maximal dispersion cost is greatly reduced. Whether these catalysts may be used in specific applications depends on their stability at operating temperatures. However, the metal is pinned to the underlying oxide support by ionic anchors with coverages, depending on the method of manufacture, of from ~ 1/10 to ~ 1/3 monolayers. Since these are in turn bound ionically to the substrate, we expect good stability at elevated temperatures. The catalysts must be manufactured in vacuum conditions. Sandia (www.sandia.gov) is seeking partners to further develop and apply this technology. For many of the potential applications, we expect our partners may need to fund additional development work at Sandia.
