- Description
- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) along with NCI's contractor, SAIC-Frederick Inc., plan to jointly conduct systems development for ovarian cancer diagnosis utilizing the Applied Biosystems Q-Star mass spectrometer on or about February 1, 2003 in anticipation of a clinical trial pursuant to an FDA Pre-market Application. Q-ToF mass spectrometry coupled with pattern recognition software can differentiate protein expression levels in serum from ovarian cancer patients versus healthy individuals by displaying diagnostic patterns of protein expression in the disease state (Lancet 359, 572-577). Thus, this technology may offer a non-invasive method to detect ovarian cancer in the early stages. Questions concerning this effort may be directed to Kevin Brand, J.D., Technology Transfer Branch, NCI; phone: 301-496-0477, email: brandk@mail.nih.gov.
