Description
MICHELSON-CHAUVENET HALLS RENOVATION - PHASE I The Project is located on the campus of the United States Naval Academy and consists of Phase I of the complete renovation of the Michelson-Chauvenet Halls complex, including Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Fire Protection, Electrical, Telecommunications/Data, and Security systems. The project involves complete demolition of all non-structural interior elements of the building, including HazMat abatement, and involves complete reconfiguration of the interior walls, circulation and engineering systems of the building, as well as limited renovation of the exterior building envelop. Phase I and Phase II together form a 82,300 GSM (270,000 GSF) academic complex consisting of laboratories, classrooms, offices and support spaces, configured as twin office/classroom towers on the upper levels and sharing a common laboratory floor at ground level. Phase I consists of approximately half of the complex or approximately 41,000 GSM (135,000 GSF) and includes the Michelson tower and a portion of the common laboratory level. The total Michelson-Chauvenet complex houses the Science and Math Departments of USNA and is used for the teaching of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Oceanography, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The complex was built in the early 1970s and the building systems and laboratory equipment have both reached the limit of their expected service life and therefore need to be completely replaced. The building layout and services do not effectively support the requirements of current teaching methods and curricula and therefore need to be completely re-configured. The estimated project cost range is approximately 25,000,000 to 35,000,000. The project is subject to a very compressed construction schedule due to mandatory academic year constraints.
