- Description
- The National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health, is soliciting proposals for the creation and maintenance of a research colony of mice to evaluate potential intervention strategies that may decelerate the rate of aging in mammals. The objective of the project is to evaluate a standing colony of genetically defined laboratory mice by comparing aging in control groups and experimental groups provided specific interventions. Efficacy of the selected interventions compared to control values would be evaluated by scientists involved in the project according to the following criteria: 1) extends both mean and maximum lifespan; 2) delays the onset and reduces the incidence of age-related pathology; 3) maintains physiological and behavioral function into late life. This colony shall be developed and maintained within controlled and defined barrier environments where animals are routinely monitored and characterized for disease status and provided specified treatments as necessary. A special requirement for this project is that the location of the mice and space for the project shall not exceed 1-hour driving time from the Gerontology Research Center (GRC), located at 5600 Nathan Shock Drive, Baltimore, MD 21224. A seven-year, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract is anticipated, with award made on or about September 30, 2003. The solicitation will be issued on or about March 7, 2003 and will be posted on this website and at http://ocm.od.nih.gov/drc/rfp.htm. Offerors are responsible for routinely checking these websites for any amendments to the solicitation. Proposals will be due approximately two months after issuance of the solicitation. All responsible sources may submit a proposal, which will be considered by the Government. See Numbered Note 26.
