- Description
- On May 29, 2002, an F-16 U.S. Air Force jet fighter crossing the Tohono O?odham Nation airspace had engine trouble and crashed. The impact area was sampled for the presence of jet fuel and heavy metals under project NUEX027102 (Oracle Environmental, 15 Oct 02). One hot spot of JP-8 contamination was identified as well as an ash-laden burn spot contaminated with heavy metals and hydrocarbons. The depth of the JP-8 contamination is between 6 ? 12 inches and the burn spot?s dimensions are approximately 40 feet in length, 15 feet in width and 1 foot in depth. This project involves the cleanup of this contamination. Contaminated soils will be excavated by hand, placed in Supersacks, transported to a staging area and loaded into roll-off containers by helicopter, and then trucked to a landfill for disposal. The bottom of the excavation will be sampled to ensure cleanup goals have been met. Supersacks will be filled with backfill material at the staging area/borrow pit. The backfill bags will be transported to the site via helicopter and spread in the excavation by hand. A final report summarizing field activities and presenting results of the sampling will be written.
