Description
Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, New Mexico) has developed technology that enables systems to infer the ongoing cognitive processes of an equipment operator or computer user in real-time. For this technology, a cognitive model is developed for an operator that reflects their unique knowledge, understanding and experience with a system(s), equipment, software, task, etc. Currently, operator models are developed through interaction with the operator, however methods are being developed to automate the data collection needed to model a given operator. However, generic operator models may be used in some applications. The system takes data from various sources and uses the operator?s cognitive model to interpret ongoing events in real-time. Prototype testing has shown that these interpretations correspond to the situation awareness/recognition of an actual operator with an accuracy of approximately 90%. Thus, the system is able to infer the ongoing cognitive processes of the operator in real-time with this level of accuracy. Given these capabilities, systems may interact with users in a more contextually relevant and meaningful manner. For example, one application that has been successfully prototyped provides detection of operator/user errors. In this case, the system uses the operator?s cognitive model to interpret ongoing events. The system also uses data obtained from observation of the operator to detect conditions in which an operator has either failed to recognize a developing situation, misinterpreted a situation or falsely believes a situation exists. Various data concerning the operator may be used including operator actions, speech, eye-fixations, physiological indices (e.g. arousal level), etc. Once potential error conditions have been recognized, various approaches may be used to alert the operator taking into consideration the urgency, criticality, relevance, etc. of the potential error. Sandia is making this Real-Time Awareness of Operator/User Cognitive Processes technology available to companies interested in partnering with Sandia to develop near-term and/or future applications.
