Description
The Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Ship Systems Engineering Station, (NSWCCD-SSES), Code 635 is in the process of updating and improving the existing U.S. Navy Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Standard Spill Response Kit and the MARK II Oil Containment and Clean-Up Kit. Code 635 is performing an ??Initial Look?? to gather background information on new sorbents to be used in HAZMAT Spill Response and Cleanup. This ??Initial Look?? will cover new technologies and Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) products that may be used to replace or improve sorbents in the existing Spill Kits or in support of newly identified HAZMAT spill requirements. NSWCCD-SSES is soliciting manufacturers' product information for the two spill kits listed above. Products must be able to handle a wide range of shipboard hazardous materials (HAZMAT Spill Kit only), as well as meet other critical performance criteria. All product datasubmitted should include information on the following characteristics: ?h Materials picked up by the sorbent ?h Tensile strength (if applicable) ?h Flammability ?h Reuse procedures (if applicable) ?h Solubility ?h Release of volatiles and liquids ?h Sorption capacity ?h Sorption efficiency ?h Dust generation ?h Density ?h Toxicity ?h Disposal requirements It is requested that any respondent include provide test results to support the criteria listed above as well as the test method used. HAZMAT Spill Response and Cleanup product information shall be submitted no later than 23 May 2003. Please contact Ms. Sarah Phillips or Mr. Carlos Cruz if further information is required.
