Overview of Function: Main Post Chapel’s primary function is to host worship services. The worship style is Traditional in nature using a pipe organ, or piano and keyboard, an occasional acoustic guitar or flute, and small choir. The service does not rel y on sound reinforcement, though it is necessary. No monitors are currently used. The chapel holds approximately 300 people. Overview of the Acoustic Environment: The long rectangular room has parallel surfaces side to side and front to back although the back is broken up by a balcony/organ loft. The ceiling is quite high and peaked and runs longitudinally down the center. The ceiling is supported by large, arching beams beginning at the floor. The front (stage) wall and side stage walls are composed of plaster. The stage rear has a large compliment of organ pipes. A large stained glass window sits center stage rear. Two r ows of pews flank the room left and right of the center isle. The sound control area is located in the balcony. Function within the Acoustic Environment: Main Post Chapel is the oldest chapel being examined and historic in nature. It is well suited for its current functions. Sound system updating is needed. Although the stage area is reflective, it is congruent with function. The choir area could make use of minor absorption of mid/high frequencies when the choir performs with the piano and keyboard. Otherwise, treatment is unnecessary. The balcony poses the greatest acoustic detriment to this room: 1. The balcony fascia is flat and reflective. Frequencies from 800Hz to 5kHz reflect in a direct line to a seating area beginning approximately three rows in front of the balcony and toward the front for about six rows. 2. The seating under the balcony is in a radically different acoustic space. Because of the low flat ceiling, near field side walls, and hard surfaces, a perfect resonant chamber is formed. The people seated in this area will feel isolated from the rest of the congregation because, in fact, acoustically they are. Overview of Remedies: Because of the historical nature of this chapel, treatments described elsewhere are not suitable in this room. It is imperative that the acoustic treatment selected for Main Post Chapel not alter the basic look of the room and fit discreetly into the existing décor. To this end we have, we have selected New Dimensions. This 2” thick product has the look of finished wall board while providing an effective acoustic solution for the Main Post problems. A factory representative is required to measure, order, and install this product. This approach insures a textural match and seamless fit. A color sample of the existing paint must be matched. The special paint to be should be acoustically porous.
