- Description
- NAICS Code: 334516 NAICS Code:334516 The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) intends to award a sole source purchase order to Affymetrix, Inc. of Santa Clara, CA. The purpose of this acquisition is to provide the GCS 3000 Gene Chip Micro Array System. The system is an integrated platform for qualitatively and quantitatively measuring gene expression levels in bacteria, rat, mouse and human. In addition to gene expression profiling, this platform will soon be useful for SNIP analysis using a 10,000 gene array platform. The principal benefit will be to our Microarray Analysis for Evaluating Genotoxicology and Cell Signaling Research, and specifically to Genetic response of Bacteria (such as Pseudomonad aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus,..etc), when exposed to antimicrobial agents (such as alcohol, glutaraldehyde, hydrogen peroxide). In addition, EPA will use this as part of a core genomics facility. Work on this project has already been completed by the University of Maryland- specifically, the mapping of the P. aeruginosa and E. coli genes. Since our market research indicates that this technology is relatively new and there is no industry standard, procuring a GeneChip system other that Affymetrix would necessitate reduplication of the effort to map the genes mentioned above. It is believed that any cost savings which may be achieved through competition cannot offset the cost of the in-house effort to duplicate the work performed by the University of Maryland. Offerors who can provide an equivalent model micro array system to the GCS 3000 which can be proven to be fully compatible with the preexisting unit at the University of Maryland can contact Alan Scanio at (202) 564-9616. Please refer to Numbered Note 22.
