Description

The US Geological Survey Western Region Core Geochronology facility has a requirement for a high-resolution, noble gas mass spectrometer for 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of young rocks. The instrument must be a magnetic analyzer with a highly sensitive ion source (1x10-3 A/torr), high resolution (>600) and a low background (3x10-14 cc STP) suitable for argon isotopic measurement when isolated from pumping systems. The spectrometer must have three electron multipliers with resulting peak shape and sensitivity sufficient to yield argon isotopic analyses of the highest possible precision. Ion source, magnet, and collector electronics and valves must be computer-controllable. THIS REQUIREMENT IS A PROCESS TO POINT OF AWARD AND AWARD WILL NOT BE MADE UNTIL AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS.
