Description
Sandia National Laboratories has designed a cable insulation resistance measurement system to measure the effective electrical isolation between the individual conductors in a cable bundle and between those conductors and electrical ground. This insulation resistance determination may be made in real-time during transient processes (e.g., cable fire tests) or be used to determine the present quality of electrical isolation for a cable under static conditions. Also, with appropriate signal generating equipment, the electrical isolation of high frequency cables may be determined. Features of the system design include: automated operation once the test cable is connected and the control program is started; the data may be used to determine the insulation resistance between specific pairs of conductors in all combinations and permutations, and between a conductor and ground, providing a full-scope picture of conductor faults and modes; the technique may be easily extended to include cable-to-cable faults; data analysis is based on simple direct V=I*R type calculations; the system works with either AC or DC sources and the input voltage levels may be adjusted to match the normal operating conditions of the cable under test; and, a sweeping frequency generator may be used at the input to test/characterize cables used for high-frequency applications. The system is scalable to monitor any number of conductors and does not require separate electrical measuring devices or instruments (e.g., voltmeters, ammeters, etc.) for each conductor of the cable under test. The method allows the use of modest power sources instead of requiring multiple or large capacity power supplies. Sandia is seeking partnerships with industry in terms of commercializing this technology. For further information please respond by mail or fax ( no phone calls, please) to Alane Dulski within 2 weeks at: Sandia National Laboratories, MS 0115, P.O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87185-0115, Fax: (505) 844-8011. Please indicate the date and title of this notice, the markets in which you would like to apply the technology, and the type of partnering agreement(s) (more information can be found on the Sandia website) your company would be most interested in entering into.
