Broadcast Planting Sites: Ponderosa Pine 500 Pine seedlings will be planted on one open area (totaling approximately 4 acres) on an 18x18 spacing. Underplanting Sites: The following areas consist of commercial sized trees with natural openings and openings created by logging activity. Openings that are greater than 80 feet in diameter will be planted using primarily Douglas-fir or white pine. Cedar, hemlock and grand fi r will be planted around the edges of openings greater than 80 feet in diameter. Cedar, hemlock and grand fir will also be planted in openings smaller than 80 feet in diameter. All open areas will be planted on an 8x8 spacing where possible. An 8x8 spac ing will not be possible in many areas due to natural regeneration, brush, slash piles or other obstacles. When obstacles to planting exist, seedlings will be planted on the smallest spacing that is possible without getting closer than 8 feet to another s eedling, and without planting under brush that would hamper seedling survival. Seedlings will not be planted within 12 feet of trees over 15 feet tall. Large parts of the stand in between canopy gaps will remain unplanted. Tree planters can expect to cover less than half of the total acreage when planting and looking for planting spots. Acreage covered varies from site to site.
