Description
The principle objective of the project is to preserve collections made during the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) era that are housed in 9 National Park units and 2 Support Offices in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. The collections were hand made by enrollees in these New Deal programs, and include wooden furnishings and doors, tin lighting fixtures and mirrors, wrought iron door hardware, and painted glass panes. In most cases, the CCC/WPA collections are in active use in these parks, are threatened by environmental deterioration, and are in need of assessment and conservation treatment. The hand-crafted objects, primarily in Spanish Colonial and Native American designs, are essential components of Park buildings of the era, and contribute to historic landmark districts in several Parks. Bandelier National Monument will act as the coordinating unit for the project, while Aztec Ruins National Monument (AZRU), Carlsbad Caverns National Park (CAVE), Intermountain Regional Office-Denver (IMRO), Intermountain Support Office-Santa Fe (IMSO / OSFT), Mesa Verde National Park (MEVE), Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO), Tuzigoot National Monument (TUZI), Walnut Canyon National Monument (WACA), White Sands National Monument (WHSA), and Wupatki National Monument (WUPA) will be collaborators and additional recipients of funds. The contractor will conserve and study the historically significant collection of CCC / WPA crafts and associated archives in 11 participating National Park units. Project work consists of the condition assessment of objects, including the production of treatment recommendations and identification of type collections. TO REQUEST A COPY OF THIS SOLICITATION, PLEASE FAX YOUR REQUEST TO THE ATTENTION OF BARBARA E. ROMERO, CONTRACTING OFFICER, BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT, AT 505-672-9607.
