Description
This is a wildlife enhancement project that involves cutting a mosaic of small patches in aspen to promote structural diversity for a variety of wildlife species. Hazardous fuels and slash generated will be treated either by mechanical mastication or machine piling. Increase diversity of structural stages within 160 acres of aspen/spruce/cottonwood in the Quartz 35 project area by cutting 29 acres of small patch cuts in a variety of shapes and sizes (0.2- 8.4 acres) interspersed within bands of denser cover. Increase early successional stages of aspen to promote growth of browse for moose, while retaining late succession stages for cavity nesting birds. Improve habitat for ruffed grouse by promoting 4 successional stages in close proximity (openings, seedlings and saplings, open mid-aged stands, and mature stages). Improve habitat for other species associated with grouse habitat such as: black bear, rabbits, and songbirds. Retain 3-4 large downed logs/acre for ruffed grouse drumming posts and habitat for small mammals. Retain large existing snags and live trees for cavity nesting birds and to promote large snags and logs over time. Maintain habitat for spruce grouse The purpose of the project is to have the contractor furnish all labor, equipment, fuel, oil, transportation (mobilization & demobilization) and supplies to perform wildlife habitat improvement work in the Quartz 35 Project Area on the Seward Ranger District of the Chugach National Forest. The work consists of tree felling, log placements, mechanical piling or mastication of felled trees and slash All responsible sources may submit a bid that will be considered. Award of this project to be accomplished under Full and Open Competition, pursuant to the Small Business Competitiveness Demonstration Program. The solicitation and drawings will be available for downloading at http://www.fedbizops.gov on the solicitation issue date. It will be the responsibility of the bidder to check Fedbizopps for any amendments to the solicitation or this announcement.
