Description
Description: The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) intends to procure on an other than full and open competitive basis, fabrication of a C-band traveling wave tube (TWT) from Northrop Grumman Corp. ESS DSD, Electronic Sensors and Systems Sector, 600 Hicks Road, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008-1098. The TWT consists of a periodic permanent magnet (PPM) stack and thermionic electron gun, multi-stage helix circuit, and beam collector assemblies brazed into a high-vacuum envelope. The TWT will be used to evaluate design techniques to improve tube linearity using newly developed numerical simulation codes as well as to study the interaction between the nonlinear amplifier characteristics and different digital data modulation schemes. The TWT will replace the highly specialized TWT developed for use in NRL's High Data Rate (HDR) Communications Program. Because of the highly specialized design and manufacturing circumstances, and the required sharing of test and design information, the original manufacturer Northrop Grumman Corp. (NGC), is the preferred vendor for providing the replacement TWT. The original TWT was the result of a unique collaboration between NRL and NGC and the development represents a considerable investment of time on the Government's part. NGC provided extensive information regarding the design of sub-assemblies and the results of cold and hot testing, including information deemed company proprietary. Access to this information is critical to the success of the HDR Communications Program, as it is needed to perform evaluations of the accuracy of developmental design methodologies and codes, as well as to be able to conduct further modeling of the behavior of the C-band TWT in high-data rate applications. Deliverables are: 1) TWT performance report, containing all measured data; 2) One helix TWT; and 3) Informal status reports. Delivery will be to the Naval Research Laboratory, 4555 Overlook Avenue, SW, Washington DC 20375, within 5 months from date of contract award. Justification and authority is FAR 6.302-1. Other business opportunities for NRL are avilable at our website http://heron.nrl.navy.mil/contracts/rfplist.htm.
