- Description
- NA This is a Sources Sought synopsis to determine availability of basic technology applicable for the generation of adaptable tactical behaviors for unmanned ground vehicles. There is no solicitation at this time. The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is conducting the Army's applied research program for future unmanned ground vehicle systems. ARL's Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance, a consortium of academic and industrial organizations is an integral part of this effort. The program is focused upon developing perception, intelligent control and human-machine interface technologies for unmanned elements of the Objective Force, including Future Combat Systems (FCS) and Land Warrior (LW). These systems will conduct multiple military missions in complex, highly dynamic tactical environments. To date the program has been highly successful in developing technology necessary to implement point-to-point autonomous mobility in unstructured off-road environments. It has implemented this technology on a number of roughly HMMWV sized (3500 lb gross weight) testbed vehicles capable of achieving speeds in excess of 20 MPH during cross-country operation. It has developed initial, primitive behaviors utilizing a case based structure. The program recognizes t hat to be highly successful in unstructured, dynamic tactical environments it must significantly increase the adaptability and flexibility of these behaviors, beyond that heretofore demonstrated in practical ground unmanned vehicle systems. Adaptable beha viors will (1) recognize dynamic changes in the environment and/or tactical situation and (2) utilize a combination of a priori and contextual information together with organic sensor data to modify or regenerate plans in real-time in a manner appropriate to achieving overall goals under the revised circumstances. These behaviors may involve multiple heterogeneous unmanned systems, including combinations of air and ground vehicles. ARL is seeking sources of basic approaches that will enable the development of adaptable tactical behaviors, as previously described. Respondents to this announcement are requested to submit a white paper, no longer than two (2) pages, generally describing their approach towards the generation of adaptable behaviors, together wi th available evidence concerning the performance of this approach. These whitepapers will be reviewed by ARL, ARL support contractors, and member organizations of the ARL Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance. Respondents are cautioned that these wh itepapers will be reviewed by non-government personnel and proprietary information should not be included. Based upon these whitepapers, ARL may extend invitations to participate in a September/October 2003 workshop held to further discuss these approache s. POC for this activity is Jon Bornstein, (410) 278-3737. Respondents to this announcement should submit whitepapers to Ms. Chandra Bizzell, Robotics Program Office (Titan Systems Corporation), U.S. Army Research Laboratory, ATTN: AMSRL-WM-RP, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD 21005-5066, not later than Friday, 15 August, 2003. The Government will not pay for any information submitted in response to this Sources Sought. This announcement in no way obligates the Government to issue a solicitation or otherwise make a contract awar
