- Description
- The purpose of this notice is to identify qualified sources for the production of Caliber .50 M858 Ball and M860 Trace Plastic training cartridges. These cartridges are intended for use in training areas where range restrictions preclude the use of full range standard service ammunition. They provide the ability to increase the frequency of training and hence the proficiency of the user by affording training areas previously closed by range restrictions. The cartridges are designed to be used in the Caliber .50 M2 machine gun with a M3 Recoil Adapter. The maximum safety range is 700 meters and the effective training range is 150 meters. The Tracer cartridge exhibits a visible trace up to 150 meters. An initial quantity of approximately 610,000 rounds will be required with three options totaling approximately 1,400,000 rounds. Delivery is expected three months after contract award. Any source interested in competing for the award of a production contract must first become a qualified source. In order to be eligible for award a design must be qualified prior to contract award (see FAR 9.206-1{c}) In order to be qualified, each design must undergo an extensive battery of tests as specified in the Government Performance Specification for the M858. Upon request, any interested contractor will be supplied with the procedures necessary to qualify a new design.
