Description

The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Arthropod-Borne Animal Diseases Research Laboratory (ABADRL)intends to enter into a sole source contract with Britz-Heidbrink, Inc., Wheatland, Wyoming. This contract is to procure four prototype insect rearing racks which are in the developmental stages in the study concerning colonization and large-scale rearing of a biting midge conducted at ABADRL, who are key to investigations concerning the role of this insect as a vector of several viral pathogens of veterinary importance in the United States, notably the bluetongue (BTV) viruses, epizootic hemorrhagic disease viruses, and vesicular stomatitis viruses. These prototype racks are only available to USDA, ARS, ABADRL and are not currently available to the public. This effort has been an ongoing effort as the demand for large numbers of laboratory-rearing insects has required development of more efficient and economical techniques and insectary equipment due to the need to replace obsolete racks. Many aspects of this product are related directly to the specific research at ABADRL.
