- Description
- The Food and Drug Administration intends to award a non-competitive contract to the University of Iowa (UI) to validate a vision test (i.e., contrast sensitivity testing) for use as a surrogate for functional performance (i.e., driving) in 65 normal subjects. This testing will be performed at the National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS), which is owned by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration and operated by UI. The luminance, contrast, spatial resolution, temporal resolution, and field of view of this driving simulator do not limit the subject?s driving performance under nighttime driving conditions. The NADS will be used to correlate the visual aspects of driving performance with contrast sensitivity in a controlled environment, and has been extensively validated against real-world driving performance on a test track. The staff at the UI/NADS has the necessary experience with driving studies and clinicians in the UI Department of Ophthalmology are prepared to carry out the ophthalmic evaluations.
