- Description
- Recently, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) awarded two multiple year contracts to procure fiber optic infrastructure to help transform the Department of Defense's Global Information Grid (GIG). The contracts are firm fixed price with a potential value of roughly $250 million for implementation and $140 million for life cycle support. FY-03 procurement funding will be used to acquire the fiber and year-to-year O&M funding will be used to sustain the fiber. The GIG Bandwidth Expansion (BE) requirement was published in FebBizOps in March 2003. (A public announcement of this award is posted on the DISA website at: http://www.disa.mil under Public Affairs, Press Releases, and GIG-BE Fiber Contracts awarded.) The awarded actions do not involve Foreign Military Sales. Although most of the geographic areas of this fiber solicitation were awarded, for multiple reasons, some were not. Currently, the Government is reviewing the underlying requirements for the unawarded areas and intends to resolicit for some or all of these requirements in a timely manner. A secret clearance (minimum) is required to receive, store, and generate, classified information pertaining to this acquisition. The actual planned site requirements are identified in a classified Annex to the Statement of Work. The potential new fiber optic contract awards will not involve Foreign Military Sales. Background: The initial procurements of fiber are part of the GIG-BE initiative and are in addition to contract awards for networking equipment. The goal of the GIG-BE is to provide a survivable, secure infrastructure for the Department of Defense.
