Description
Advanced Computational Electromagnetics (ACE) Workshop, SN04-14. The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is sponsoring an informational gathering workshop for a possible new DARPA ACE program. This potential program would undertake development and validation of new approaches for electromagnetic scattering prediction relevant to radar cross-section (RCS) design of surface ships. Specific foundational challenges to be addressed in the anticipated ACE program are: (1) Prediction of scattering from rough and/or dynamic surfaces; (2) Incremental updating of previously computed solutions when the geometry or material properties of a scatterer are perturbed; (3) Hybridization of techniques to efficiently handle scatterers having defined regions with different characteristics (e.g., scale of geometrical detail, types of materials); and (4) Quantitative propagation of uncertainties in properties of the scatterer and illumination to uncertainties in the scattering prediction. The workshop will be held March 29, 2004 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Pentagon City in Arlington, VA. The workshop goals are: (a) introduce the relevant research and practitioner communities in academia, industry, and Government to the ACE program vision and goals, and (b) promote formation of teams having capabilities to develop new mathematical and computational methodologies, design benchmark applications for the evaluation of these new approaches, and foster their insertion into the practice of designing ships and other military vehicles. The workshop will include overview presentations by Government personnel and poster sessions preceded by summary overviews to facilitate interaction and team forming among the participants. Appropriate teaming will be a critical element in responding to an anticipated DARPA ACE solicitation in summer 2004. Participants are strongly encouraged to prepare posters and three-minute summary overview presentations describing areas of capabilities and interest to facilitate communications, interactions and teaming discussions. A short abstract of each poster presentation is required. Explicit instructions for preparation and submission of these materials, as well as workshop details including registration information, are given on the ACE workshop website: http://www.eventmakeronline.com/dso/View/Index.asp?meetingid=241. The workshop registration fee is $165.00 and includes all workshop activities. Registration is limited by the venue capacity and early registration is strongly recommended. The registration cutoff date is Wednesday, March 17, 2004 or at attendance capacity, whichever comes first. DARPA anticipates, but cannot guarantee, that a solicitation will follow the workshop. Further administrative information is available from Mara Scheele (mscheele@snap.org). Additional technical information can be obtained from Douglas Cochran (dcochran@darpa.mil). Please refer to the ACE Workshop in correspondence.
