Description

The purpose of this conservation treatment is to restore the 1859 ?florentine bronze? finish on the cast-iron supports of one of the sixteen historic cast-iron and wooden benches in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol, to conduct research and prepare specifications for a complete restoration of the bench for exhibition, and to replicate the original finish on the other fifteen benches. The work will include transporting the benches, making structural repairs, and stabilizing the original coatings, cast iron, and wood; cleaning and protecting the surfaces; and submitting a written report with photo documentation. The upholstered surfaces will not be changed. A study of the benches documents their condition in 2000. The study identifies three benches with original coating layers and the two benches that were replicated in the 1970s. No more than 8 of the benches may be removed at a time.
