Description

The purpose of this conservation treatment is to restore the integrity and beauty of the eight (8) 16' x 22' gilded frames that hold the paintings in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol. The goal is to preserve and stabilize as much of the existing historical material as possible. The frame conservator shall clean all surfaces, consolidate the gesso and wood substrate, restore losses of gesso and decorative elements, and bring gilded surfaces to an even appearance within each frame and around the Rotunda by integrating new gilding with the historic gilding. The toning should enhance the paintings while harmonizing with the surrounding architecture. Frames will be treated on site in the Rotunda. The conservator will be responsible for protecting the historic oil-on-canvas paintings, which will remain in the frames, and for protecting the adjacent architectural surfaces and sculptures.
