Description
This project will inventory intertidal sand and mud infaunal invertebrates in Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) parks, and provide recommendations for long term monitoring. The minimum needs are: a) Characterize the composition and distribution of intertidal invertebrate assemblages inhabiting intertidal sand and mud flats in the SWAN parks, primarily focusing on dominant bivalves in these assemblages; b) Characterize abiotic factors known to influence species composition, distribution, and relative abundance in infaunal assemblages in these important soft sediment habitats, including inorganic (grain size and sorting) and organic (Total Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen) properties; c) Identify candidate target species for long-term monitoring based on: distribution, abundance, sensitivity to habitat change, ecological importance, and ease of sampling; and d) Recommend biological parameters to measure for target species; physical parameters to measure for habitats. The minimum requirements are: a) Principal investigators must have at least twenty years field work experience working with soft sediment invertebrates in the northern Gulf of Alaska - specifically Cook Inlet and Shelikof Strait. This is essential because contractor must have taxonomic familiarity with local benthic infauna and habitats, and knowledge of how to sample in vast remote intertidal flats that are unique to this area of the North Pacific; b) Principal investigators must have experience in evaluating effects of the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) on soft sediment habitats and invertebrates in the northern Gulf of Alaska (outside of Prince William Sound). This is essential because SWAN parks were impacted by EVOS and have ongoing oil persistence monitoring that needs to be evaluated as part of the contract; c) Specialized experience in surveying benthic infauna by trawl, diving, benthic grab, dredge and box core, underwater television, and still photography. This is essential for conducting a comprehensive inventory of Park coastal habitats; and d) Experience working within the parks, and with the staffs of Lake Clark, Katmai, Aniakchak, and Kenai Fjords National Parks on marine resource protection issues. This is essential because the contractor must recommend monitoring strategies to protect park resources.
