- Description
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in conjunction with the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCHMD) intends to negotiate, on a sole-source basis with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, 2500 North State Street, Jackson, MS, 39216, Tougaloo College, 500 West County Line Road, Tougaloo, Mississippi, 39174, and Jackson State University, 1400 J.R. Lynch Street, Jackson, Mississippi, 39157, for the continuation of the Jackson Heart Study. The Jackson Heart study is the largest investigation of causes of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in an African American population. During the last five years, the University of Mississippi Medical Center has developed an Examination Center responsible for recruiting participants and conducting the examination. The Jackson State University has developed a fully functioning Coordinating Center and is preparing data analysis for events for Exam I as well as developed a partnership for community awareness to provide the Jackson area community with practical, up-to-date information on reduction of risk factors, practices of health lifestyles, health fairs to enhance awareness and acceptance of critical preventive health messages.. Tougaloo College has provided public health coursework, hands-on training within the study, summer science, language and epidemiology and prevention focus to minority students and trainees at a wide range of educational levels in the Jackson community. This nine year continuation will re-examine the approximately 5,100 study cohort for genetic and environmental causes of CVD as well as continue to build research capabilities in minority institutions, address the shortage of minority investigators in epidemiology and preventive care and reduce the barriers to dissemination and utilization of health information in a minority population. The anticipated period of performance will be from June 1, 2005 through May 31, 2014. The procurement is made under the authority of 41 U.S.C. 253(c)(1)- only one responsible source. This is not a Request for Proposal (RFP). Any organization desiring consideration must identify their interest in writing, within 45 days from the publication date of this synopsis. See numbered Note 22.
