Description
Technical POCs: Dr. Kathryn Taylor, Boyan Onyshkevych and J.K. Davis; Contractual POC: Mr. Roy Peters (DOI/NBC). The Program Managers for the Research on English and Foreign Language Exploitation (REFLEX) Program will host an unclassified review of the program for interested representatives of Government and industry on Monday, 29 March 2004. The briefing will be held from 1:00 to 3:30 at a Department of Homeland Security facility in downtown Washington, D.C., near the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station. Specific directions will be made available to all participants who register as specified below. The Program Managers will take questions, and will present an overview of the REFLEX Program and respond to questions submitted in advance to the POC listed in BAA-04-01-FH. The purpose of the REFLEX Program is to addresses research issues in algorithms, techniques, technologies, and methodologies for partially or fully automating aspects of the process of acquiring information from text documents and other natural language-based sources. Government information analysts need dramatic improvements over today?s capabilities in order to be able accomplish their analytic tasks in the future. The overall goal is to develop automated tools that will assist human analysts in judging, quickly and accurately, the utility of individual documents in English or one or more foreign languages, and of clusters of documents that are related topically or along certain other dimensions; and in identifying specific facts or other items of interest from single documents or sets/clusters of documents. The long-term goal is to allow the human analyst to be able to perform accurate information analysis from an automatically-produced English-language translation or from an automatically-produced, condensed, English-language textual or non-textual rendition (summary) of a document or document cluster, instead of from the foreign language original(s). Organizations wishing to send representatives should register via e-mail to Tracy.Wilson@dhs.gov, or via fax to:(202)772-9916. Registration is limited to persons with U.S. citizenship. Include name of attendee and affiliation. Registration requests should be received not later than 22 March 2004. Registration will be confirmed and instructions for finding the briefing site will be returned by 26 March 2004. The number of representatives for each organization may be limited based on the response to this announcement.
