Description
The Department of Energy (DOE) has identified hydrogen as the fuel of the future. It may be used in fuel cells or internal combustion engines and is traditionally stored as a high-pressure compressed gas or a cryogenic liquid. Since the mid-1990?s, the demand for hydrogen produced at refineries has grown at a rate of 5% to 10% annually. This demand is growing more rapidly as hydrogen finds a stronger position as a fuel in the transportation sector. Hydrogen is used as a fuel additive to upgrade fuel quality and meet the stringent emissions specifications for gasoline and diesel or as a stand-alone fuel. Steam reforming of natural gas is the preferred method for generating hydrogen. Other production methods used to generate hydrogen have been declining since the mid-1990?s due to unfavorable economics. In addition to production costs, the overall economics of hydrogen generation and use is impacted by the costs of compression, liquefaction, transportation, and storage. (NREL Report NREL/SR-540-32525). The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) has devised and modeled a novel alkaline metal-based hydrogen generation process that has the potential to significantly reduce the cost of compressing and liquefying hydrogen. The INEEL has been investigating the energy requirements and products released in a controlled alkaline metal and water process. The unique characteristic of an alkaline metal / water reaction is that the reaction will take place at elevated pressures. At elevated pressures, the hydrogen gas may be dispensed directly into vehicles as a compressed fuel, or the stored energy of the compressed gas may be incorporated into pressure letdown processes to liquefy a portion or perhaps all of the hydrogen produced by the process. The INEEL has identified a production process that can easily be varied to generate hydrogen at pressures specific to the application. Other products resulting from this process are recycled in the closed loop process for continuous reuse and generation of hydrogen. The INEEL is soliciting funding and development collaboration from qualified companies to support the technology development program and to test the proprietary process at pilot scale. The project development period is expected to last 24-36 months. At the conclusion of the development project, the firm may seek up to an exclusive field of use license for patented and patent pending intellectual property developed under this project. This solicitation of interest will close on 5/31/2004 Points of Contact related to this solicitation: Technical?Dennis Bingham/ /208-526-3452/ bingdn@inel.gov or Kerry Klingler/ 208-526-4516/ klinkm@inel.gov .
