Description
Sources are sought for an effort to verify improved durability to the Pratt + Whitney F100 engine exhaust nozzle divergent seals utilizing advanced high temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC). The United States Air Force operates F-15 and F-16 fighter aircraft powered by the F100 turbine engine. This turbine engine has an axisymmetric translating nozzle with an aft divergent section. This nozzle currently utilizes 15 metallic divergent seals that have a high field replacement rate. This requires frequent inspections and the universal availability of spares in the field for sustained mission readiness. Advanced technologies are being sought to increase engine exhaust nozzle life and reliability for improved warfighter readiness. Contractors must possess the technical ability to perform an advanced component verification task. This task shall include F100-229 exhaust nozzle divergent seal fabrication, assembly, flight-testing, performance parameter verification, data analysis, and reporting. Given the limited life of current metallic divergent seals, only experienced contractors utilizing advanced high temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) will be considered. F100-229 divergent seals, spares, and metallic attachment hardware that may be fastened directly to the CMC will be contractor provided. It is anticipated the F100-229 engine and test aircraft will be government furnished. Sources shall ensure any proposed solution will result in turbine engine exhaust nozzle technologies capable of meeting full life. The full life requirement is 4300 Total Accumulated Cycles (TAC) for the F100-229 exhaust nozzle divergent seals. Potential sources will need to have verified a minimum of 90% full life through actual F100-229 ground engine experience. A successful ground test is defined as completing the ground testing with no through-thickness cracks in the test articles, and no delaminations greater than 9 square inches and contained to only the surface ply for the test articles. The estimated award date is Dec 2004. This date is subject to change. The period of performance is anticipated to be 24 months for the technical effort plus 4 months to prepare the Final Report.
